Number 164 hides one of the most famous addresses in Lisbon. At least for us this is, without a doubt, one of the most exclusive. The entrance is extremely elegant, with sober and dark tones welcoming us to one of the best known avenues in Portugal, Avenida da Liberdade. The entrance hides a very discreet and luxurious hotel called Valverde. Immediately we got inspirations by London’s and New York’s townhouses, but with Portuguese architecture details, like they were intertwined in an eternal dance. Valverde is a true oasis, a hidden gem in a European capital that does not stop growing, and where new hotels appear every day. There is a lot of competition on offer, and sometimes small details make the difference in this bustling city, and Valverde knows better than anyone how to stand out. The building reveals itself in our every move, through the corridors and works of art we feel a luxuriant fragrance that shows us the way. During the check in you can already feel what makes this place in the heart of Lisbon so special.
“A green labyrinth in the middle of a concrete city. The visual and relaxing impact that such a green space brings to a hotel is simply extraordinary. “
The kindness of the staff, always ready to welcome you like they are receiving you at their own home. But in a way, it really feels like that: the contemporary furniture combined with a handpicked selection of works of art from popular Portuguese artists, and the unique layout of the space, feels more like a stylish private residence than a hotel. The expression “bigger the better” does not match with Valverde. This hotel does not need to stand out for the size or quantity of rooms, but for the quality of the rooms, the structures, the decoration, the fragrances and the entire environment that surrounds this small city paradise. After visiting the common areas of the hotel, it was explained to us the great expansion that the Hotel has undergone in the last 3 years. Valverde now features a total of 48 rooms and suites, a brand new restaurant with a bar called Sitio, a new living room with natural light and a balcony overviewing the emblematic indoor patio where the guests can enjoy a heated swimming pool. We stayed in one of the new suites, with a contemporary decor but respecting the building’s history. Spacious and very comfortable, it is divided into 3 distinct areas: the living room, bedroom and bathroom (wide with high ceilings and nice shower). Fresh flowers and fruit on the table and the perfect view of the São Jorge castle and to one of the most emblematic neighborhoods in the city. From the 26 new rooms and suits to the 22 older version rooms, each room has a different aesthetic to it, from neoclassical to Scandinavian mid-century modern, and their own rich colours and personality, they all share the same residential design.

The hotel’s light design was very well done, they managed to create a very immersive, private and mysterious atmosphere while giving us the feeling of peace and disconnection. But the real secret of this hotel is hidden inside: a small oasis that is unlike any other in the city. The trees seem to grow to the sky. A green labyrinth in the middle of a concrete city. The visual and relaxing impact that such a green space brings to a hotel is simply extraordinary. They call this oasis “SITIO”, which means “place”. Place to socialize, to talk, negotiate… A place to start the day with a strong breakfast, lunch or dinner. A small verdant paradise full of labyrinths and architectural lakes. Valverde is all of this. It reveals itself constantly at every step. The restaurant during the day immerses itself in the surrounding nature and becomes a fresh and inviting place; at night it transforms into a cozy and luxurious environment, with enigmatic lights and impeccable decor. If you are travelling for the fist time to Lisbon (or even for regular visitors) Valverde is definitely one of the best choices in town: The ultimate discreet comfort on an unique and premium location of the city of Lisbon.
