My journey to this slice of paradise began in Malé, the capital of the Maldives. As the seaplane gently touched down on the azure waters of the Dhaalu Atoll, I knew I was in for an extraordinary experience. The aerial view of the Maldives’ coral-fringed islands is a sight to behold, a prelude to the natural wonders that awaited at the St. Regis. After a scenic 45-minute seaplane ride, I arrived at the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort, and what a welcome it was! The iconic overwater villas, extending over the turquoise lagoon, are a marvel of modern design. Each villa boasts its own private pool, sundeck, and direct access to the ocean below. In the spirit of embracing nature in a more private and immersive manner, my choice was a Beach Villa with a Pool. It was a personal preference that allowed us to feel even closer to the pristine beach and the natural wonders that surrounded us. The sense of seclusion and direct access to the beach was an enchanting aspect of our stay, offering a deeper connection with the environment. The panoramic views of the endless ocean stretched to the horizon, offering a sense of tranquility that instantly whisked away the stresses of everyday life. One of the highlights of this Maldivian paradise is the house reef, which is just a few fin kicks away from the villas. Snorkeling gear in hand, I embarked on an underwater adventure that would bring me face to face with the vibrant marine life of the Indian Ocean. The coral gardens were a kaleidoscope of colors, and as I swam alongside schools of fish, I felt like a character in a documentary. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some gentle giants—manta rays and whale sharks—gracefully gliding through the water. Designed by the visionary team at WOW Architects, the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort embodies a profound commitment to sustainability, luxury, and a harmonious coexistence with the natural world. This dedication to a unique concept is intricately woven into every aspect of the resort, from its architectural design to its operational philosophy. The resort’s underlying ethos can be summed up in the pursuit of “Low Impact and High Experiential Return.” This guiding principle is not just about economics; it’s about creating an intimate and exclusive experience that allows guests to connect with the pristine beauty of nature without the presence of large crowds. In this remote paradise, isolation and privacy come with a higher price, but the rewards are immeasurable. Surrounded by a vast “House Reef” and various distinct ecological zones, the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort seamlessly integrates its physical design with its natural surroundings. The island’s landscape comprises the lagoon, beach, coastal, and jungle areas, each with its own unique activities and experiences.

From a water amphitheater and signature spa in the lagoon zone to two signature restaurants on the beach, a nature discovery center and pop-up cafe in the jungle zone, and a dive center and signature bar in the coastal zone, every part of the resort is designed to enhance the guest experience within these ecological contexts. In line with the commitment to environmental conservation, the landscape concept revolves around preserving the existing island flora and fauna. Any displaced plant material is carefully replaced with locally sourced species from neighboring islands, ensuring minimal disruption to the natural environment. The architectural and interior design of the resort is a seamless extension of the primary concept—nature itself. The forms and spaces are inspired by nature, and they harmoniously coexist with the primitive hut-like structures, creating a unique architectural expression that celebrates the resort’s surroundings. One remarkable environmentally friendly choice during construction was the use of a pre-fabricated timber system, which minimized the impact on the environment, logistical challenges, and labor requirements. Concrete and steel were used sparingly, with an emphasis on cross-laminated wood technology in the construction process. This approach not only reduced the carbon footprint but also showcased a commitment to sustainable building practices. Moreover, the resort demonstrated a deep commitment to the local community and environment by employing maximum local labor. Local craftsmen were engaged to create arts and crafts for the interiors, and traditional construction methods were employed, particularly in landscape design. Looking ahead, the resort plans to source staff from the surrounding islands, thus supporting local communities and ensuring an authentic island hospitality experience.

The St. Regis Maldives leaves no stone unturned when it comes to gastronomy. Each meal was a delightful journey for my taste buds. I savored fresh seafood at Alba, authentic Asian flavors at Orientale, and innovative cocktails at the Whale Bar, perched on stilts over the ocean. But the pinnacle of my culinary adventure was an intimate dinner at the overwater restaurant, Iridium. With the soft lapping of waves beneath and a canopy of stars above, it was a dining experience that transcended the ordinary into the realm of the extraordinary.
As if the natural beauty wasn’t enough, the St. Regis Maldives offers an oasis of relaxation at the Iridium Spa. Nestled among lush tropical gardens, the spa is a sanctuary of rejuvenation. I indulged in a signature massage that left me feeling like I was floating on air. The treatment rooms overlook the serene lagoon, and the soothing sounds of nature provided the perfect backdrop to my spa journey. For the adventure seekers, the resort offers a plethora of water sports, from kayaking and paddleboarding to jet-skiing and windsurfing. I couldn’t resist the thrill of a jet-ski ride, cruising through the waves and feeling the wind in my hair. For those interested in exploring the local culture, the resort offers visits to nearby islands, where you can interact with the warm and friendly Maldivian communities. Every evening, the resort hosts the champagne sabering ritual at the Whale Bar—a truly magical experience. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the resident sommelier expertly uncorked a bottle of champagne with a saber, and we toasted to another day in paradise. The hues of the setting sun mirrored the effervescence of the bubbly, creating a moment that was both opulent and surreal. As my time at the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort came to an end, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of longing. The beauty of the Maldives, the unmatched luxury of the resort, and the warmth of the staff had left an indelible mark on my heart. It was a journey that transcended the ordinary, a glimpse into a world where nature’s beauty and human artistry coexist in perfect harmony.
