ES XARCU: The Timeless Culinary Sanctuary
S/N, Cala Es Xarco, 07839 Sant Josep de sa Talaia, Illes Balears, Spain
For over three decades, Mariano Torres and his wife, Caridad Cabañero, have been the heart and soul of Es Xarcu, a restaurant that has woven itself into the very fabric of Ibiza’s culinary heritage. What began as a humble establishment has grown into a cherished institution, known for its unwavering commitment to quality and authenticity. Recently relocated to the picturesque Church Square in Es Cubells, Es Xarcu continues to enchant visitors with its timeless appeal and exquisite cuisine.
Stepping into Es Xarcu is like entering a world where time stands still. The restaurant’s new location offers a stunning backdrop, with views of the island’s last unspoiled cove that seem almost too beautiful to be real. As you take your seat, the warmth of the staff’s smiles and the genuine care in their service make you feel like a part of the extended Torres family. This sense of belonging is a hallmark of the Es Xarcu experience, where every meal is a celebration of life’s finer flavors.
The menu at Es Xarcu is a love letter to the sea and the island’s maritime heritage. On this visit, our meal began with a refreshing gazpacho served in tall, chilled glasses—perfectly invigorating. This was followed by deep-fried “raor Ibiza,” a local fish specialty, and golden, crispy calamari. The meal progressed with succulent garlic-fried shrimp, leading to a main course of grilled fish accompanied by potatoes that were so tender they melted like butter. For dessert, we enjoyed a traditional pudding that was the perfect sweet ending to a memorable meal.
Each dish is a testament to the restaurant’s profound dedication to Ibiza’s culinary treasures. The catch of the day, which might include rotja, mero, denton, or Gallo San Pedro, is prepared with a touch of magic and tradition in the restaurant’s timeless oven. The result is a symphony of flavors that captures the essence of the Mediterranean, where the freshness of the sea meets the skill of the chef.
The wine selection at Es Xarcu is exceptional, perfectly complementing the rich flavors of the menu. Each glass enhances the dining experience, adding to the overall pleasure of the meal. The service continues to be impeccable, with attentive staff who ensure that every detail is taken care of.
Es Xarcu is more than just a restaurant; it’s a sanctuary where culinary dreams are brought to life. Mariano Torres, Caridad Cabañero, and their devoted family have created a personal paradise where every guest is an honored part of their story. In every dish, every smile, and every shared moment, Es Xarcu invites you to discover the true heart of Ibiza—a journey of taste, tradition, and personal connection that will remain etched in your memory long after your visit. Despite sharing this hidden gem, it remains a pearl of Ibiza that we wish could be kept as a well-guarded secret.
LA ESCOLLERA: The Mediterranean Haven
Playa Es Cavallet, 07817 Sant Jordi de ses Salines, Illes Balears, Spain
This one, we had to come back to again. After visiting La Escollera last year, it quickly became a favorite, and we knew it was a place we simply couldn’t miss on our return to Ibiza. For nearly three decades, this beachfront restaurant has been a cherished gem in the island’s dining landscape—a place where locals and travelers alike come to experience Ibiza’s authentic flavors amidst stunning natural beauty.
The story of La Escollera begins with “yaya”, the beloved grandmother who laid the foundation for what would become one of Ibiza’s most iconic dining destinations. Her famed paellas, infused with the rich aromas of fresh seafood and saffron, set the stage for a culinary tradition that continues to enchant visitors. Nestled on Es Cavallet beach, with breathtaking views of Formentera and the endless Mediterranean horizon, La Escollera is more than just a restaurant—it’s a slice of paradise where time slows down and each meal becomes a celebration.
The menu at La Escollera is a testament to the island’s natural bounty and culinary heritage. The restaurant’s commitment to excellence is evident in its use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients, which are transformed into a symphony of flavors that cater to a wide range of palates. Seafood lovers will find themselves in heaven, with offerings such as the iconic Gallo San Pedro, served with Ibicenco-style potatoes, and the oven-baked seabass, encrusted in sea salt sourced from the nearby salt-flats. Each dish is a masterpiece that marries tradition with innovation, ensuring that even the most discerning diners are left in awe.
But what truly sets La Escollera apart are a few special touches that make the experience unforgettable. They serve the best Iberian Ham on the island, hand-carved right in front of you—a sensory spectacle as much as it is a culinary delight. And then there’s the cava sangria, which is simply the best you’ll find in Ibiza. It goes down as easily as juice, but by the end, you’ll find yourself feeling quite cheerful and light-hearted, thanks to its delightful potency.
La Escollera caters to those with a sweet tooth or special dietary needs. The vegan paella, for instance, is a tribute to the inclusive spirit of the restaurant, ensuring that every guest can partake in the culinary magic that unfolds here. The combination of mouth-watering dishes, stunning views, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere makes La Escollera a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the true essence of Mediterranean dining. For us, it’s a place that holds a special place in our hearts—so much so that returning this year felt more like a homecoming than just another meal. The atmosphere is both tranquil and joyful, with the gentle sound of the waves lulling you into a long, leisurely lunch. We hope to return again next year to find the same stunning views and unforgettable flavors that make La Escollera so special.
ZUMA IBIZA: A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
Paseo Juan Carlos I, Numero 17, 07800 Eivissa, Illes Balears, Spain
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow across the Ibiza Marina, we arrived at Zuma Ibiza, a dining destination renowned for its blend of Japanese tradition and contemporary elegance. Positioned on a rooftop with sweeping views of the serene waters, the old town, and the iconic Dalt Vila, Zuma Ibiza promises a memorable experience. However, our evening began with an unusually long wait for the first bottle of water, which made us feel like we were in an endless desert rather than a luxurious dining spot.
Zuma first opened its doors in London in 2002, thanks to chef Rainer Becker’s vision of modernizing Japanese cuisine while staying true to its roots. Since then, Zuma has expanded to cities like New York, Hong Kong, and Dubai, each location mirroring its local flair while maintaining Zuma’s commitment to top-notch ingredients and inventive dishes.
We were thrilled to be seated near the DJ booth, where the upbeat music inspired us to dance as we dined—talk about multitasking! The vibrant atmosphere, combined with the sweeping views, set the perfect stage for an enjoyable evening.
The highlight of our meal was the chef’s specially designed menu. This bespoke experience allowed us to sample Zuma’s iconic dishes, starting with the marinated black cod wrapped in hoba leaf. This dish, a Zuma classic, is known for its delicate balance of sweet and savory flavors, and it lived up to its reputation with every melt-in-your-mouth bite. The sashimi was fresh and expertly sliced, showcasing Zuma’s dedication to high-quality ingredients.
The izakaya-style dining, where dishes are meant to be shared, added a fun, communal vibe to the evening. We enjoyed a variety of dishes, from flavorful grilled meats to perfectly prepared seafood. Each dish arrived at the table in a well-timed sequence, making us feel like we were on a culinary roller coaster—without the need for seat belts!
However, dessert was a letdown. Instead of the famed massive dessert platter we were expecting, we were served a selection of smaller desserts that, while charming, didn’t quite hit the high notes set by the rest of the meal. And speaking of letdowns, the negroni was a bit of a disappointment. As someone who takes their negronis seriously, I have to say that this one missed the mark—it was like someone forgot the “classic” part of the classic cocktail. With tiny ice cubes turning it into a bit of a sad, watery mess, it managed to kill my evening buzz faster than you can say “shaken, not stirred.”
Overall, Zuma Ibiza continues to be a top choice for its stunning location and impressive food. Despite the slow service and a dessert that didn’t quite make the grade, we look forward to returning to savor more of Zuma’s renowned dishes. We’re optimistic that next time, the service will be quicker, and the dessert will be just as delightful as the rest of the meal. After all, where there’s a Zuma, there’s a way!
EXPERIMENTAL BEACH: Culinary Journey by the Sea
Camino Cap des Falco, 4856, 07818 Ibiza, Illes Balears, Spain
Nestled on the edge of Cap des Falcó within the stunning Ses Salines natural reserve, Experimental Beach is not just a place to dine—it’s a destination where the flavors of Ibiza come alive. Known for offering one of the best sunset views on the island, this beachside retreat pairs breathtaking scenery with a menu that delights the palate.
Getting to Experimental Beach requires a bit of an adventure. Visitors should be prepared for a bumpy ride down a rugged path, but rest assured, the journey is worth it. Far in the distance, the iconic rock of Es Vedrà stands tall, its mystical silhouette adding a touch of magic to the scene as the sun slowly dips behind it. The fading light paints the sky in warm hues, creating a perfect backdrop for what’s to come.
From the moment you arrive, the relaxed vibe of Experimental Beach draws you in. The staff, with their warm and welcoming demeanor, set the tone for an evening of culinary exploration. Our table, perfectly positioned with a view of the tranquil waters, offered a front-row seat to the unfolding sunset—an ideal start to our meal.
The menu is a celebration of the island’s rich culinary heritage, infused with a touch of creativity. We began our journey with a selection of tapas that capture the essence of Mediterranean cuisine. The patatas bravas were crispy and well-seasoned, the pimientos de padrón fresh and flavorful, and the jamón a savory delight. However, it was the calamares fritos that truly stood out—tender, perfectly cooked, and seasoned just right. These small plates were paired with expertly crafted cocktails, including a classic negroni and a refreshing “besito,” each complementing the flavors on our plates.
For the main course, the monkfish was a highlight, cooked to perfection with a texture that was both firm and delicate. The squid, another seafood favorite, was tender and full of the ocean’s flavor. Though our steak arrived slightly undercooked, the quality of the ingredients and the overall experience made up for this minor hiccup.
The dessert selection at Experimental Beach offers a fitting conclusion to the meal. The caramelized brioche, served with coconut ice cream, was a standout—rich and indulgent, yet balanced by the cool, refreshing ice cream. The mousse, though elegantly presented, fell short in flavor, but by this point, the overall dining experience had left us more than satisfied.
A well-curated wine list added to the evening’s pleasures, with each glass complementing the dishes it accompanied. The service was impeccable, with staff attentive to our needs without being intrusive. Whether you’re a foodie seeking the best of Ibiza’s culinary offerings or simply looking for a place to enjoy a beautiful sunset, this beachside spot delivers on every front. As the sound of gentle waves and soft music fill the air, it’s easy to lose track of time—a long lunch here can easily stretch into the evening.
(NEW OPENING) YELLOW FISH BEACH CLUB BY W HOTELS: Chic Seaside Dining
Carrer des Riu, 54, 07840 Santa Eulària des Riu, Illes Balears, Spain
Santa Eulalia Beach, nestled on the southeastern coast of Ibiza, is known for its tranquil waters and relaxed ambiance. The beach’s scenic beauty and laid-back vibe make it a favorite destination for those seeking a peaceful escape from the island’s more bustling areas. In this picturesque setting, Yellow Fish Beach Club by W Hotels has recently made its debut, adding a fresh, modern twist to the local dining scene.
Although still a newcomer, Yellow Fish Beach Club quickly captures attention with its stylish and contemporary design. Reminiscent of the chic coffee shops in Canggu, Bali, the décor sets an inviting yet upscale tone, perfect for enjoying a leisurely meal with the soothing sound of waves in the background. The space aims to become a new hotspot on Santa Eulalia Beach, complete with beach beds and a lively yet relaxed atmosphere.
The menu offers a delightful fusion of Mediterranean and international flavors. We started with the ham croquettes, which were soft and savory, and the creamy hummus, a fantastic beginning to our meal. The red tuna tartare was particularly impressive, with a texture I had never experienced before and a flavor that was spot-on. While opinions on the texture varied, the overall taste was excellent and certainly a dish I’d recommend and order again.
Our group enjoyed a variety of dishes, including meat, fish, and chicken, all of which were cooked to perfection. We chose the sangria by the glass, which proved to be a refreshing complement to our meal.
The service at Yellow Fish Beach Club was notably attentive, enhancing our overall experience. The staff’s care and professionalism added to the relaxed yet vibrant ambiance of the venue. With its combination of beachside comfort and lively music, Yellow Fish Beach Club is set to become a new favorite in the area. We look forward to returning next year to see how the space evolves and to offer a more detailed review of its development.
LIO IBIZA: Where Dining Meets Spectacle
Passeig Joan Carles I, 1, 07800 Eivissa, Illes Balears, Spain
We went all out with our glam gear for a night at Lío Ibiza, leaving behind flip-flops and sandy toes for an evening of high style and even higher entertainment. The transformation from beach casual to red-carpet-ready was well worth it. After all, it’s not every day you get to swap the sun and sand for sophisticated dining and jaw-dropping performances.
Lío Ibiza isn’t just a dining spot; it’s a full-on sensory extravaganza. Nestled in Ibiza Town with stunning views of the marina and Dalt Vila, this venue combines top-notch cuisine with performances that make you question if you’ve ever truly seen a show before. The place is so dazzling, you might find yourself forgetting the details of the meal – although we do remember that the sushi was king and the wine was excellent. Seriously, the show was so captivating that our memories of the food are a bit hazy. Who knew entertainment could be so powerful?
Since its grand opening in 2011, Lío has been the go-to destination for those seeking a night of high-energy entertainment. The extravagant dinner shows are renowned for their world-class performances, including acrobats, dancers, and musicians who turn the night into a vibrant celebration. We were lucky enough to dine at DJ Sebastian Gamboa’s table. Although he wasn’t DJing at dinner, having him there was a real treat. If you’re familiar with Ibiza’s music scene, you know Gamboa’s deep house beats are legendary.
During the show, we were treated to a mesmerizing performance featuring a glittering wrecking ball that swung across the room with a performer on top. It was just one of many jaw-dropping moments that made the evening unforgettable. The sensuality of the place is not for everyone, but that’s part of its unique charm. Lío is not your everyday restaurant – it’s a dazzling spectacle that everyone should experience at least once if they’re a frequent visitor to Ibiza.
After the meal, we rolled straight into the “Vintage” after-party, where Lío transforms from a chic restaurant into a pulsating nightclub in the blink of an eye. It’s like someone hit the switch from fine dining to full-on dance mode! The party was every bit as lively and unforgettable as the show, making it clear that Lío is not just about the meal – it’s about creating an entire evening of excitement and celebration.
So, while we might not remember every dish we enjoyed, we’ll never forget the exhilarating vibe of Lío Ibiza. If you’re planning a trip to Ibiza, make sure Lío is on your list. It’s a place where dining meets spectacle in a way that’s both captivating and, quite frankly, a lot of fun.
